Ohio has professional sports teams in almost every popular sport played in the country, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer and hockey. Most people have heard of their professional teams like: the Cleveland Indians and the Cincinnati Reds – their Major League Baseball teams. There are also the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals the major Football Teams from Ohio. As for basketball everyone has heard of the Cleveland Cavaliers; and as for their National Hockey League there is the Columbus Blue Jackets. Last but not least is Ohio’s Major League Soccer team the Columbus Crew. As a side note regarding Ohio’s influence on baseball, the sport’s first completely professional team hailed from Ohio: the Cincinnati Red Stockings organized in 1869. If you are interested in finding more from baseball historians themselves, go to canada 411 for the different options available for you.

Ohio sports don’t end with the major teams. There are also minor league baseball teams, indoor football as well as arena football to be enjoyed, along with lower division soccer and mid-level hockey. Minor league teams include the Akron Aeros, the Chillocothe Paints, the Dayton Dragons and the Columbus Clippers. In addition to these recognizable teams there are the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and the Toledo Mud hens.

The minors don’t end with baseball of course as there are also minor league football teams that need to be mentioned: the Cincinnati Marshals, the Canton Legends, the Cleveland Fusion and the Cincinnati Sizzle. Not to go unnoticed there are also the Columbus Comets, the Mahoning Valley Thunder and the Columbus Destroyers.

Not to be outdone, when it comes to hockey teams Ohio also has the Dayton Bombers, the Lake Erie Monsters and the Cincinnati Cyclones.

The recession has not come to an end and Democrats and Republicans continue to haggle over the best way of continuing the economic recovery. On the whole, the economic prospects seem bleak and there is no reason to be confident of improvement in the real estate market in the country in the near future.

However, there is one place in the country which is actually offering sops to those who purchase property in the city. St. Bernard is offering waivers and sops to those individuals who obtain real estate mortgage loan and buy property in the city. The city lost more than half of its population due to the ravages of hurricane Katrina. This was a low point in the overall administration of the city and population fled from the city seeking better and safer alternatives.

No other major hurricane has hit this city since then but fear of the mishap still continues. The administration is at its wits end to solve the problem because lack of manpower is creating a vicious cycle. Lack of citizens is affecting standard of living which discourages others from migrating to the city. Authorities are hoping that the real estate sop offered at a time when people are being forced to file for foreclosure and bankruptcy due to inability to repay home loans will act as a stimulant.

Critics pointed out that a holistic approach is required and merely bringing people back into the city will not remove these scars. Critics called for wholesale improvement in the administration of the city to ensure such a crisis never occurs again.

Straddling the borders of Ohio and Kentucky where the Little Miami and Muskingum Rivers meet is Cincinnati. This massive metropolis (which spans almost 80 square miles, offering some of the Midwest most beautiful scenery) boasts a heritage that is uniquely American.

It was established in 1788, when explorers were seeking land beyond the eastern coasts (where European sensibilities still reigned). The intention was to tame the plains and prairies, to push at the frontier until it submitted; and that intention succeeded when men stumbled upon the fertile bluffs of the bluegrass region. There is a settlement was formed and was deemed the first true American city.

And this is reflected in its many offerings. Potential residents after receiving a moving company quote and discovering the easy costs of Midwestern living are encouraged to sample history: the Cincinnati Art Museum provides over 60,000 pieces of Native American and African designs (offering glimpses into the tragic age of slavery). BB Riverboats weaves guests along the water and hearkens back to the days of steam transportation, which helped to shape the city. The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center chronicles the bravery of men and women who sought social revolution. And the American Sign Museum allows visitors to take a charming walk through the past, surrounded by flickering lights and neon, with advertisements displayed in all their glowing glory. The experience is one of a kind.

Cincinnati stands as Ohio’s most famed city and those wishing to indulge in history should seek it. Its origins are still inspiring; its beauty is undeniable; and all who visit will wish to stay.

Every state is famous for certain foods and beverages, just like they have state animals, state flowers and state birds. It isn’t commonly thought of, so finding the information was time consuming, but the foods Ohio is famous for may surprise people.

In Reynoldsburg, Ohio Paragon tomatoes were ultimately developed (invented) by A. W. Livingston and used by the local populations in colonial Ohio.

Since tomatoes were so common and grew so well in Ohio’s climate and landscapes it made sense that their state drink would be tomato juice. Tomato juice is delicious, especially when mixed with the juices of other fruits or vegetables, like apple or carrot juices.

Ohio is the Place for Corn and Soy Beans, but not Officially

The top producing crops in Ohio are corn and soy beans, although Ohio is the number two egg producer and number one Swiss Cheese producer in the US. Tomatoes are actually the number three product of Ohio. Averaging 186 acres per farm, the state has over 80,000 farms to produce food.

Cincinnati has long been known as “Porkopolis” because of its high number of pig farms and pork packing plants, but it wasn‘t really officially named by law for the food, like tomato juice. Another food that’s associated with Ohio is the Shaker Lemon Pie. The Shakers and the Amish settled many parts around Canton, Ohio.

Ohio’s official state tree (written into law) is the Buckeye, although there is no official food product made from Buckeyes. There is a Buckeye candy, but it has no relation to the tree except for appearance of the Buckeye.

Though the official date of Ohio’s statehood is March 1, 1803 it is an interesting story as to how Ohio wasn’t “officially” a state until a mistake was discovered and corrected in 1953. Jefferson was president on February 19, 1803 when Congress approved Ohio’s constitution and boundaries, but failed to pass a resolution that would formally admit Ohio into the Union as the 17th state. This was in part due to the fact that Congress hadn’t started the practice of declaring the official statehood of a state until 1812 when Louisiana was accepted into the union as the 18th state. In truth a formal resolution admitting Ohio into the United States wasn’t necessary, but still being seen as an oversight George H. Bender recognized the situation and introduced a bill to Congress requesting that Ohio be admitted into the Union and making the resolution retroactive to march 1, 1803. The Ohio state legislature held a special session at the old state capital located in Chillicothe. There they approved the petition for statehood and then had it delivered to Washington, D.C. by horseback. It was on Ohio’s 150th anniversary as a state that on August 7, 1953 then President Eisenhower signed Ohio into the United States declaring that March 1, 1803 was the official date of Ohio’s admittance into the Union.

When you have a bad situation unfold out of nowhere, it can be very hard to adapt in time to avoid serious damage from it. When you have a financial crunch, for instance, it can be all too easy to end up having to borrow money from shady people who may charge you a whole lot of interest (and may even end up beating you up if you miss a payment) just to get by. Unfortunately, many people have gotten to a point so low that this seems like their only option. Fortunately, there is still hope.

For instance, there is a company called PayDay One that offers payday loans all the time and is completely above board. First off, it is state licensed, which means it has had to meet certain criteria in order to operate as a chain. While an independent hustler might be able to hide out somewhere, it is all but impossible to hide an entire chain of shady cats. Being licensed becomes even more difficult when you operate in more than one state, as PayDay One happens to do. While some states might be less stringent on the companies that operate there, two different states should provide you with even more peace of mind.

One of the best things about PayDay One is that it operates in Ohio and offers you three different options for paying back your loan. You can make interest and fee only payments up to four times (if your cash crunch continues for a while), you can pay off your loan in full, or you can make regular payments toward the principle for a time. The interest rates are also quite reasonable by payday loan standards, not to mention they are some of the lowest in the industry and subject to the company’s Great Rate Guarantee. Overall, if you are going to take out a loan, deal with a solid company.

Ohio has been called the “Mother of Presidents” and for good reason. It has sent seven of its own to the White House. They include: Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, Warren G. Harding, William McKinley, James A. Garfield, William Howard Taft, and Benjamin Harrison. Interestingly enough, all of them were Republicans. Though a Virginian by birth, William Henry Harrison spent his life in Ohio. He was also president, of course, but not a Republican; he was a Whig. Next to Virginia, Ohio seems to have had the biggest impact on those who resided in the White House. The state of Ohio has been recognized as having a little bit of everything to offer: it has north-eastern and parts that are southern, there is both urban and rural to offset each other as well as poverty and suburbs with the booming up-and-comers.

As for political leanings, Ohio (as of 2008) has been in the Democratic Party’s camp. With approximately 2,408,180 registered Democrats it is heavily in this party’s favor when compared to its 1,486,470 registered Republicans. Those voters who don’t claim a party affiliation have approximately 4,057,520 voters after having lost about 15% since 2004. With 7,937,161 registered voters in total it is clear which side they went with as in 2008 Barack Obama won the popular vote in Ohio with 51.50% of the state’s vote. But interesting to note also is that of Ohio’s 88 counties, Barack Obama only took 22 of them.

Ohio lost a congressional district in 2000 leaving it with 18 representatives for the United States House of Representatives. Following the 2010 Census it is expected that Ohio will lose two more seats.

When it comes to Ohio’s economic interest it has always been able to show itself strong. It has won awards from various magazines for its business growth and constant business development. It has boasted a high gross domestic product ($466 billion in 2007) consistently falling within the top 10 states in the union.

Ohio experiences all kinds of weather conditions, some fair and some frightening. Though not the only state to experience the thrill of killer tornadoes, Ohio has certainly has had a history with them that would blow you away.

In 1965 on Palm Sunday 37 tornadoes blew a path through Ohio, Indian and Michigan. It took the lives of 256 people. For Ohio which lost 55 people, it was the second deadliest tornado event in Ohio history. The Lorain Tornado outbreak in 1924 was the only one to surpass it. Only one tornado set down on April 11th and was the only one to pass through a major metropolitan area as it skirted along the edge of Toledo. This F-4 tornado leveled homes and scattered debris for hundreds of yards.

April 3rd and 4th of 1974 saw 148 tornadoes that ripped across 13 states, topping the Palm Sunday break out in 1965. It was a super outbreak of tornadoes that killed 315 people and injured more than 6000 others. Ohio experienced 12 of those tornadoes that took the lives of 36 people.

The tornado that set down nine miles southwest of Xenia tore 32 miles through Xenia and Wilberforce and on into Clark county. It took 32 lives. Green Memorial Hospital treated more than 1300 people for injuries due to that tornado.

By May 31, 1985 another rash of tornadoes, 41 of them, 14 of which were killer tornadoes, ripped through northeastern Ohio, southern Ontario and across Pennsylvania. The region was not prepared for this calamity having never experienced such a large outbreak of tornadoes before. Trumbull County suffered the most with the loss of 11 people. This was the worst outbreak of tornadoes since the Xenia Tornado back in 1974. The worst tornado was the one that hit Portage County and cut 47 miles through the county to Newton Falls and Hubbard before moving on to Pennsylvania. It was the only F-5 tornado of 1985 and by far the deadliest tornado in to hit Ohio in more than a decade.

History buffs thoroughly enjoy tidbits of information about hisotrical places, people, and exciting areas to visit. It’s not unusual to find entire families taking their vacations to places like Washington, D.C. to tour the White House and learn about our nation’s history. Places like Ohio are also a drawing attraction for history enthusiasts who are interested in knowing more about one of the core locations of our nation’s beginnings.

In Ohio, located south of Columbus is the German village — a richly historic neighborhood that is well-known for its assortment of history and events that occurred in the past and create intrigue in visitors who want to know more about the area. The area was settled by German immigrants in the early 19th century. German Village is listed as an attraction on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the premier historical restorations found in the entire world, and a gold mine of education for those who enjoy history.

However, even amidst all of the bevy of information about history, events and people from long ago, visiting rich, historical places like Washington or Ohio is also good for finding entertaining venues to go on a family vacation. For instance, Ohio is also the place you want to go to see the famously enormous Columbus Zoo where you can take a behind-the-scenes safari tour and even get up close to fantastic creatures in the Kangaroo Walkabout exhibit. There is no experience like it! Also, be sure to take a few snapshots of those cute monkeys doing goofy tricks or of your child holding one of their beautiful Lorikeets. Attach your snapshot to a few postcards and send them home to family and friends for them to enjoy and to let them know you’re thinking of them while you’re on your wild safari excursion.

Every traveler has had a vacation interrupted for some reason or another, such as delayed airplanes, missing luggage, or even weather problems. While some of these annoyances are impossible to avoid, savvy travelers can plan ahead when it comes to the weather- locate your vacation rental and investigate the season.

Most hurricanes and typhoons are seasonal occurrences that are slightly predictable.

Each of these natural disasters occur in a certain place at a certain time of year. Hurricanes occur in the Atlantic Ocean between May and December, typhoons occur in the western Pacific Ocean between May and December, and tornadoes are produced by cold air and hot air meeting, usually in the spring or fall. Some destinations are impacted more than others, so if you’re planning a vacation, be sure to do your research in advance.

1. Florida

Hurricane season reaches its peak in late August and early September, when the water in the Atlantic is at its warmest. While many travelers are tempted to take an early-autumn trip to Florida, this could coincide with a tropical storm or hurricane. Waiting until October or November significantly increases your chances of enjoying an interruption-free vacation. Don’t be surprised if you see a lot of availability for vacation rentals during the peak of hurricane season – smart travelers know to avoid this time like the plague.

2. The Philippines

When typhoons follow a straight path, the islands of the Philippines can be struck badly. These intense storms reach their peak from August through October as well. If you’re going to travel across the world to the Philippines, the last thing you will want is an interruption to your trip. Avoid these months and you can soak up the sunshine in the Philippines instead.

3. Tornado Alley

The central area of the U.S., extending from Northern Texas into Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and even further north, have earned the nickname Tornado Alley because of the frequency these places see tornado weather each year. This area of the U.S. has experienced some of the most violent tornadoes in the history of the country. Tornadoes occur when warm and hot air collide, and can occur at any time of the year, though predominately when transitioning between a warm and cool season.

4. Thailand

Many travelers dream of the blissful beaches of Thailand. However, it is essential to avoid typhoon season if you want to stay safe and enjoy your trip. The path of a typhoon determines what places are affected. This means that several years could go by without Thailand being hit by a typhoon – but smart travelers won’t take their chance by visiting between August and October.

5. The Caribbean

Other than Florida, one of the areas most affected by hurricanes is the Caribbean. There are several paths hurricanes can take, but in some instances, the Caribbean (and even Mexico) can be hit by storms. Gorgeous beaches are no fun at all during a storm, so avoid hurricane season in the Caribbean at all costs.

Sometimes it is necessary to consider the seasons when traveling. Have you ever had one of these bad storms interrupt a vacation? Post your stories.

Most museums are a feast for the eyes and nothing more. A statement that is generally true, but not always. For an artistic buffet for all the senses, visit the Wexner Center on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. The Wex, as it is affectionately known, is a modern art museum that has standard art shows, is a venue for the performing arts, functions as a movie house, and is capable of feeding the masses. On any given day, anyone hungry for cutting edge art can visit the Wex to feed their eyes, ears, skin, nose, and tongue.

Visitors to the Wex need to train their eyes to not only take in the rotating exhibitions that fill the wills, but also upon the architecture itself. The building is a nod back to an armory that once stood on campus while also serving as an example of the direction art museum design may take in the future. The exhibitions likewise are grounded in the historical framework of art while also breaking the mold of what many people may consider to be art.

For the ears, the Wexner Center serves as a venue for emerging musical talents. The performance space, housed within the museum, provides a stage for indie rock acts, jazz performers, as well as theatrical performances that blend traditional plays with emerging technological developments.

While touching is generally forbidden at museums as well as for most of the exhibits at the Wexner Center, the skin is not always forgotten. The recent Andy Warhol exhibition provided several opportunities to physically touch the art installations. Patrons of the Wex are also given the opportunity to shake the hand of the artists, directors, and musicians whose works are presented.

The nose and tongue are not forgotten at the Wex. A European inspired café serves daily scratch made breakfast and lunch as well as providing coffees, teas, and juices. Walk in to taste and smell what they have to offer.

Step back in time during your visit to Columbus, Ohio. German Village, just south of downtown, is a visual reminder of the way the city once looked. Brick streets provide a reverberating ambiance to the tour of the neighborhood once populated by German immigrants. While most of the original families have now moved out of the neighborhood, the old-world charm has not. Shopping, dining, and entertainment are all within this walkable 233-acre neighborhood.

The shopping options in the area range from quaint gift shops to a sprawling maze of a bookstore. The latter is something to behold. The Book Loft is a 32 room experience in and of itself. Entire afternoons can be spent getting lost on the labyrinth of rooms containing books of every topic imaginable. Book lovers may find the only reason to leave The Book Loft is to find something to eat.

The food choices in German Village are diverse despite the name of the area. Of course there is the requisite German restaurant, Schmidt’s Restaurant and Sausage Haus, which opened in 1886. It has all the standard German fare, including half pound Jumbo Cream Puffs. Fine dining in the area can be found at the trendy Barcelona and Lindey’s. The area also has the city’s best deli, Katzinger’s. Those with a sweet tooth, who do not think they can handle a cream puff, should visit Pistacia Vera for a bite-sized pastry that is as delicate as it is delicious.

Working off all of that food is not difficult thanks to all of German Village’s entertainment options. Walk to any number of the area’s museums, or cap the night off with a drink at Club 185. In June, take the annual Haus und Garten Tour or take in one of summer’s free Shakespeare play in Schiller Park. Visitors can celebrate German Village’s heritage during the fall Oktoberfest.

The state of Ohio presents an interesting paradox when it comes to considering the historical question of slavery. Ohio was ahead of its time when it outlawed slavery in its first constitution drafted in 1803. Though African-Americans in the state lived under a legal form of freedom, the same legal system also denied them the basic rights of other residents of the state. For example, they were not allowed to testify in court if a white person was on trial for a crime, they could not send their children to publicly funded schools and they could receive no financial support from state poor houses. They were also not allowed to be a member of the state’s militia or to have the basic right to vote. Though they had left slavery behind in the South, they were still bound by the shackles of racism.

This legal flip-flop of freedom was coupled with racist pressures within white society. Many whites had a strong fear that African-Americans coming into the state would take away employment opportunities for whites. They actively pushed to keep them out of the state altogether. On the flipside, there were many whites who went in the opposite direction. They were supportive of African-Americans, especially during the period of the Civil War when slaves were fleeing north on the Underground Railroad. They risked their lives and being arrested to help funnel these travelers to freedom.

Despite the racism and efforts of narrowminded whites, African-Americans still continued to cross Ohio’s borders to find conditions that were remarkably better than those found down south. Their iron determination to start a new life and achieve freedom overcame these obstacles, though it took another century of strife to get the total freedom that they desired. This goal was achieved during the Civil Rights Movement, that eventually got the strength needed to make legal freedom a reality.

Stepping back into Ohio’s history is easily done when you visit the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center located in Dayton, Ohio. The museum offers a broad range of programming for both adults and children that brings to life the fascinating story of African Americans in the state. There are museums displays that take you from the early days when African-Americans first entered the state into the 20th century and beyond through the turbulent years of the Civil Rights Movement.

For example, the display titled “From Victory to Freedom: Afro-American Life in the Fifties,” takes you through the period from 1945 to 1965. Starting with the end of the war, you will take a walk through this time by looking at actual items from the period, photos and three-dimensional settings. This includes a fifties barbershop and the interior of a church. The scenery comes to life with recordings of music and the voices of those who lived through this period. You can also get an inside look at African-Americans’ contribution to the history of music by watching a short film titled “Music As a Metaphor.”

The museum is also home to traveling and temporary exhibitions that feature a singular topic. Teachers can also bring their classes to the museum to take part in various educational programs. Presented by the museum staff, these programs take children into their state’s history by presenting it on a level that they can understand. Programs are geared for different age groups. Schools can contact the museum for further information and to schedule a class visit.

The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center is a destination that should be high on your list the next time you visit Ohio. It will change how you see the state’s history and provides education to the general public through enjoyable and engaging presentations. They also help to keep the contributions of African-Americans to the state from being forgotten.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is one of the best of its kind in the country, and is a one-stop source of learning and entertainment for visitors. Started in 1920, the museum has grown over the decades and now has a current focus on presenting research in science, education and conservation of the natural world. It also offers over 140 educational programs for the approximately 80,000 students that visit the museum each year. Visitors can peruse a variety of permanent exhibitions and look over the vast collection of natural history artifacts that are housed here.

For example, the museum holds over 5 million specimens and items within its collections. Visitors can stop to see Lucy, which is a cast made a 3.2 million-year-old skeleton of a human being. Children will go crazy for the life-size replicas of dinosaurs from the past, including a Tyrannosaurus rex. For a more recent exhibition, museum goers can stroll through the Perkins Wildlife Center and Woods Garden. This area showcases plant life and animals that are native to the state of Ohio.

Behind the scenes, museum curators conduct research into the following areas: physical anthropology, archaeology, botany, zoology and paleontology. Other museum staff help visitors travel to the stars in the Shafran Planetarium. They can also look at a telescope that was constructed in 1899 in the Meuller Observatory. Rockhounds can find over 1,500 kinds of minerals and gemstones that are located in the Wade Gallery.

For those who like something different, the museum regularly hosts special events that give visitors a different twist on a familiar topic. For example, there will be upcoming events on the natural history of chocolate and a variety of hands-on activities for all ages on Astronomy Day. Regardless of your interests, you will be able to find something to catch your fancy at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Normally, when you think of Ohio, the first thing that comes to mind is agriculture, which was one of the primary industries in the state’s early history. But something that you might not consider is how important the construction of canals were to the state early on. In 1820, Ohio’s population was bursting at the seams with over 580,000 people in the state’s boundaries. One of the biggest problems they faced was minimal ways to travel and transport goods in and out of Ohio.

Individuals could travel over The National Road that ran from Cumberland all the way to Wheeling, but were in for an expensive trip. The other option was to travel over the Ohio- Mississippi River passage, but the risks were great and the trip too lengthy. The answer to the state’s prayers came in the form of a canal that was being built to bring Lake Erie, the Hudson River and New York City together. It would offer a safer, more efficient and cheaper way to travel and ship goods. Other canals that were constructed around the area had their heyday until 1855, when they ran approximately 1,000 miles.

Their high tide was brought to an end by the advancement of the railroad into the West, which made traveling over land cheaper and faster. The canals are no longer bringing in the profit and had become too expensive to maintain. Much of the land and water way that had once been used for transport was sold to private investors. Many of them suffered major damage during the flooding that occurred in 1913 due to excessive snow. In current times, the remnants of the canals that are left are being restored and protected. Current efforts are being made to transform the canals to serve a new purpose as recreational areas for the state and its visitors. This helps to keep alive their importance in Ohio’s early history.

When you think of a football team with a winning past, you will often hear the name of the Cowboys or the Bears. The Cleveland Browns are another team to have an interesting past history in professional football. Started in 1945 by Arthur B. McBride and Robert H. Gries, the team was to make a splash in the next four decades. The Browns were able to nab a total of eight league championships and won their way into 21 playoffs. The team also garnered 18 division titles.

Starting off in 1946, the Browns played in the American Football League under the tutelage of coach Paul E. Brown. He would stay as the head coach until 1962, not only giving the team a long period of quality coaching but also his name. For the four years that it was a member, the team won the league championship each year. It then went on to stellar performance in the National Football League, taking the championship in the first year it joined.

The team changed hands in 1953, when Sol Silberman purchased Arthur McBride’s share of the team. Robert Gries remained as owner of the other half. The Browns repeated their success by winning the 1954 and 1955 championship. Their success turned sour in 1956 when many of their players, such as Otto Graham at quarterback, retired from professional football. There was a bright spot in this losing season, as a new rookie was brought onto the team. In the draft, Jim Brown joined their ranks and would later become a phenomenal running back.

The period from the early sixties into the nineties had periods of unrest and winning. They took the 1964 championship, but wouldn’t see this level of winning again for quite a while. They continued to be successful on the field but were able to reclaim their former glory in the championship ring until 2002 when they return to the playoffs.

Cincinnati, Ohio has played a major role in the history of professional baseball. The first professionally played game was held here in 1869 featuring the Cincinnati Red Stockings and the Mansfield Independents. The Red Stockings were defeated their opponents by winning with a score of 48 to 14. The team was on fire during the period of 1869 to 1870, winning a total of 130 straight games without a loss. They also hold the honor of being one of the first members of the National League.

The team came on to the championship stage when they won the World Series in 1919. Their victory turned hollow, as this was the famous series where the opposing White Sox team had several players caught throwing the game. Despite the tarnish of the 1919 World Series, the Red Stockings continued to win through the next three decades, constantly making their way into the playoffs. They finally regained their World Series championship in 1940.

The home turf for their games was at League Park, which eventually became Crosley Field in 1934. The team played in this ballpark until 1970. Once again, the Reds made a splash in baseball history by hosting the first night game here in 1935. After holding a total of seven night games during the season, fans began to pack the stands even more. The team saw the total attendance at times of approximately 18,000 fans during evening games while daytime attendance stayed much lower.

Later in the 20th century, new stars came on the roster and help to bring the team back on the winning side. One of these was Pete Rose, who joined the team in 1970. The team also changed ballparks at this time, moving to Riverfront Stadium. They gained big names such as Johnny Bench and came under the management of Sparky Anderson. Throughout its history, the team has had ups and downs, but is a favorite with Cleveland fans.

The Midwest is home to deadly tornadoes and dangerous thunderstorms each year. Some of these storms, though, stick out in Ohio’s memory as having a vengeance all their own. One of these is the Lorain tornado that struck the area on June 28, 1924. Though not one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the state, it does carry the highest number of fatalities.

About 4:30 on Saturday evening, the tornado got its start near Sandusky Bay and started to spin toward the east. It caused major destruction within a nine block radius of the city and then headed off towards Lake Erie. It then struck Lorain, taking out a total of 500 dwellings and causing major damage to over 1,000 homes in the area. Every single business within the downtown region was damaged, and approximately 200 vehicles were covered with debris from the storm. The State Theater in the city was the scene of 15 deaths. Altogether, 85 people were killed by the storm, with 72 of these individuals being from Lorain.

An earlier storm that occurred in 1920 on Palm Sunday unleashed a total of 30 tornadoes and eventually killed 153 individuals, 29 of which were in Ohio. The storm itself was approximately 1,200 feet across and ravaged homes, buildings and the land that it passed over. At times, two tornadoes were running parallel to each other as they wrecked havoc on the western Ohio countryside.

These record storms also brought massive flooding in 1913, which is considered the largest natural disaster ever to hit the state. Desperate measures were taken to block the floodwaters, including dynamiting some of the canal locks to stop the flooding. Dayton saw water levels of up to 20 feet in the city, and across the state over 20,000 homes were completely decimated. A total of 428 people were killed.

Ohio has been home to a variety of famous individuals, from sports to those who have soared into the stars. One of the state’s native sons is Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. His birth occurred on August 3, 1930 outside of Wapakoneta, Ohio. He found an early interest in flight and airplanes starting at age two when his father took him to the Cleveland National Air Races. This early visit spawned a lifelong love of soaring in the sky and he spent his childhood constructing plane models and even building his own wind tunnel.

He finally got his chance at the age of 15, when he started taking flying lessons. He completed his training by age 16 and earned a student pilot license. Neil Armstrong continued his education through a United States Navy scholarship and attended Purdue University, pursuing an aeronautical engineering degree. The Navy called him to war in 1949 where he flew 78 missions in the Korean War and received three medals for his efforts. He finally graduated in 1952 from Purdue and received a masters degree in aerospace engineering at the University of Southern California. He spent part of his time after school working at the NACA Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratories in Cleveland.

His subsequent career as a test pilot and engineer led him into destiny when he entered the space program in 1962. His first job with NASA was as a backup command pilot for the Gemini 8 crew. His exemplary service with NASA led to him being chosen for the historic flight into space in 1969 when he and Buzz Armstrong took man to the moon for the first time. Neil Armstrong, one of Ohio’s native sons, is an excellent example of how determination and hard work can help you achieve extraordinary things.

The Civil War divided the United States during the period from 1861 to 1865. States were often divided as to which side would be supported, and Ohio was not immune from the worst effects. Ohio had its own unique situation, which had started with its early settlement. There was a large proportion of whites who had established settlements near the Ohio River, having come from the south. Many of these individuals have families still residing in the southern states who owned slaves.

These settlers were part of a group called the Peace Democrats, who firmly believed that the war should not be fought. Other members of this group included those who feared that freed slaves would take away white jobs, those who wanted to avoid the killing that would occur, who were against a draft or who did not want to leave their families behind.

Despite their presence in the state, Ohio was an active participant in the effort against secession. The state sent over 260 regiments to war, equaling a total of 310,654 soldiers. The sons of Ohio saw action in every battle throughout the fighting, along with many who went to serve the union effort as officers. Ohio sent to the union some of its most talented generals, some of whom helped bring the war to an end. These include such figures as Ulysses S. Grant, Philip Sheridan, William Tecumseh Sherman and Don Carlos Buell. Sherman is best known for his march to the sea, where he brought modern warfare to the Confederate countryside. Grant took the lead of the Union Army and turned it aggressively against Lee’s forces, bringing them to an eventual surrender.

Though divided in some respects, Ohio did come to the aid of the Union and delivered results. Its sacrifice of lost sons, fathers, brothers and husbands help to ensure that the union stayed together.

On January 4, 2011, the Ohio Buckeyes will go to battle with the Arkansas Razorbacks at the Sugar Bowl. The Buckeyes currently stand with 11 wins and one season loss, while being seven and one in the Big Ten. The Razorbacks currently have 10 wins and two losses for the season, and stand six and two in the SEC. The game will be played in the Louisiana Superdome located in New Orleans.

The Buckeyes are taking a strong team to the turf, starting with Micheal Brewster,a junior center at Ohio State University. He has made the final list for the Rimington Trophy, which is given to the best center playing college football. This six foot, five inch junior offensive lineman has started in his first three years at Ohio State. He will bring a fortified experience to the field.

Brian Rolle, a five foot eleven inch senior linebacker, will also bring leadership and experience to the game. He has ranked second on the Buckeyes with 94 total tackles and is a master hitter for the defense. He is also a jack-of-all trades on the field, with the ability to play a number of positions. His contribution will be key in the game. The Buckeyes will be able to bring the fight to the Hogs with such talent as these players and so many others on the roster.

The Razorbacks will present a tough competitor, having recently beat LSU and making a strong showing playing against Alabama, only losing by one point. The game looks to be an excellent match up for fans on both sides, as the game was quickly sold out after tickets went on sale. Those who can’t attend the game in person will be sure to catch it on television. It will be aired on ESPN, starting at 7:30 eastern standard time.

Located in Mentor, Ohio, James A. Garfield National Historic Site features the former president’s home where he moved his family in 1876. Titled Lawnfield, the house and property were set up in 1832, where Garfield spent the years up to 1880 farming and enjoying family life. In this year he became the Republican nominee for president and his home became the center of his campaign, where it was managed. He only spent a short time as president when he was assassinated in 1881 in Washington, D.C, but left behind a beautiful estate for today’s visitors to enjoy.

His wife continued to live on the property after his death and added a library with two more rooms onto the home. Today, managed by the National Park Service, the home enjoys its former glory as it is preserved for visitors to tour. When you come to the site, park rangers will take you on a guided stroll through the home’s interior, explaining its history and significant areas that were used when Garfield was alive. Specialty tours are offered on the first Saturday each month. These takes you into areas of the home that are not shown during the daily tours, and you will be able to see the basement, service quarters, third floor along with the barn built in the 1870′s and the windmill on the property.

Through the interpretive talk and tour, you will get a feel for what it was like to live in the Garfield home before he became president. You also can understand how his front porch run for president was successful and the part that this beautiful home played in our country’s history. The scenic property is a treat in itself, and you will not regret taking an afternoon to stop and visits James A. Garfield National Historic Site.

Ohio is home to David Berger National Memorial, which will provide you with an unexpected and rewarding stop in your travels. David Berger was a phenomenal weightlifter while attending Tulane in the period from 1962 to 1966 and earned himself a weightlifting title from the NCAA. He also graduated with a bachelor’s in psychology and later a law degree from Columbia University. During the 1970s, he moved to Israel and worked his way into being chosen for the country’s Olympic team in 1972. Before this, he had also won a silver medal in the Asian Games. His victory and opportunity of a lifetime turned to tragedy after arriving for the games in Munich, Germany.

One evening at the games, David and his 10 other teammates were taken hostage on September 5, 1972. Members from a Palestinian organization called Black September were able to get into the athletes living quarters and entered the team’s rooms. Two of the athletes were killed at the apartments, while David and the remaining team members died at the airport after being shot. Their deaths resonated around the world as the entire affair was broadcasted over various news networks. It was a devastating blow to the Olympic games and quick reprisals were brought about by Israel. The memorial was established to his memory in those the other athletes were killed in this horrific incident.

The memorial that honors his life and those of the other athletes who were killed was completely restored by 2006. It is now located on the property of the Mandel Jewish Community Center that is located in Beachwood, Ohio. During the year, visitors can stroll through the community center grounds and see the memorial where it is positioned outside. If you are a collector of National Park Service cancellation stamps, you will be able to stamp your passport during the center’s regular operating hours.

If you are traveling through Ohio, you should take a stop at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. This beautiful spot honors those who were killed and did the fighting during the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. It also serves as a testament to the peaceful relationship between the United States, England and Canada. The memorial itself consists of a Doric style column that is 352 feet tall. There are elevators available for those who are unable to use stairs to reach the platform deck.

The memorial is not the only thing that that the park has to offer. There is a visitors center that features the story of the Battle of Lake Erie and gives you an in-depth look into the determined leadership of Oliver Hazard Perry. At the rank of Commodore, he took his ship out to sea from the harbor that was located near the park and into battle. Leading the vessels under his command, Perry defeated the British hands down and made his name in history. These events are introduced also in the park film that is shown in the visitor center.

For a different flavor, you can get outside and take in the view of the memorial by climbing to the top. The deck of the memorial is 317 feet over the lake. Starting in June, rangers at the park will do both interpretive talks and living history. During living history presentations, staff are in period uniforms and you can watch them either fire off flintlock muskets or cannon. The reenactors will be able to explain the process, the life of a soldier during this time and answer any questions you may have.

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial is well worth a visit, and should definitely be put on your spring vacation list of stops. Your family can get both an enjoyable experience and learn at the same time.

First Ladies National Historic Site located in Canton, Ohio serves to preserve the memory and contributions of the many first ladies throughout our country’s history. The two main structures on the property are the Victorian Ida Saxton House and the City National Bank Building.

When you arrive, the first place to stop is the Education and Research Center located in the City National Bank Building. The structure was erected in 1895, and within its walls are housed a number of exhibits. You can also watch the park film in the Victorian era theater that can seat up to 91 people. The bank also houses a research library, which can be used if you contact the park and schedule an appointment.

Next stop on your visit should be the Ida Saxton House, which was originally constructed in 1841. Ida Saxton McKinley was the wife of president William McKinley. The home had some changes made in 1865, but has currently been restored to its Victorian era appearance. You can take a walk through the home led by staff in period costume who will help you understand the history of the home and the many exhibits throughout it. The items you will see include artifacts from past first ladies that show the crucial part they played in the White House. You will see some of the dresses so that they have worn, personal effects and place settings from the White House.

The park also has special exhibits and events that focus on various first ladies that occur throughout the year. If you plan to take a tour of the home or bank building, the Park Service suggests you arrive at a minimum of 10 minutes early. There are no tours offered on Mondays, but are offered weekly Tuesday through Saturday. First Ladies National Historic Site is a fascinating walk through history and your family will enjoy the time spent there.
