Ohio Is On My Mind When It’s Vacation Time!

History buffs thoroughly enjoy tidbits of information about hisotrical places, people, and exciting areas to visit. It’s not unusual to find entire families taking their vacations to places like Washington, D.C. to tour the White House and learn about our nation’s history. Places like Ohio are also a drawing attraction for history enthusiasts who are interested in knowing more about one of the core locations of our nation’s beginnings.

In Ohio, located south of Columbus is the German village — a richly historic neighborhood that is well-known for its assortment of history and events that occurred in the past and create intrigue in visitors who want to know more about the area. The area was settled by German immigrants in the early 19th century. German Village is listed as an attraction on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the premier historical restorations found in the entire world, and a gold mine of education for those who enjoy history.

However, even amidst all of the bevy of information about history, events and people from long ago, visiting rich, historical places like Washington or Ohio is also good for finding entertaining venues to go on a family vacation. For instance, Ohio is also the place you want to go to see the famously enormous Columbus Zoo where you can take a behind-the-scenes safari tour and even get up close to fantastic creatures in the Kangaroo Walkabout exhibit. There is no experience like it! Also, be sure to take a few snapshots of those cute monkeys doing goofy tricks or of your child holding one of their beautiful Lorikeets. Attach your snapshot to a few postcards and send them home to family and friends for them to enjoy and to let them know you’re thinking of them while you’re on your wild safari excursion.

Ohio the 7th most populated state of America can truly be termed as land of variations. Be it land, transport, climate or the people every thing is unique in itself and quite different from other states of America. Like other places the flow of news in Ohio is good and lucid. The spread of media channels and news agencies easily serve the information hungry people of Ohio. The geographical location of Ohio is such that it has made it a tourist attraction all over the world. The news about the development of the region and the unemployment are on rise. Government of Ohio is taking measures to overcome the entire drawback which are affecting the people of Ohio in some way or the other. The rising crime in the state is a serious matter of concern. The property crime has been in news some time back. Measures had been taken to reduce crime which concerns humans directly. The entertainment is a factor which keeps the people of Ohio all geared up. People visiting the state can get a taste of some real entertainment thing. The night life of this place is very popular. Tornadoes, Hurricanes, and Typhoons: Which Destinations You Should Avoid and When

Every traveler has had a vacation interrupted for some reason or another, such as delayed airplanes, missing luggage, or even weather problems. While some of these annoyances are impossible to avoid, savvy travelers can plan ahead when it comes to the weather- locate your vacation rental and investigate the season.

Most hurricanes and typhoons are seasonal occurrences that are slightly predictable.

Each of these natural disasters occur in a certain place at a certain time of year. Hurricanes occur in the Atlantic Ocean between May and December, typhoons occur in the western Pacific Ocean between May and December, and tornadoes are produced by cold air and hot air meeting, usually in the spring or fall. Some destinations are impacted more than others, so if you’re planning a vacation, be sure to do your research in advance.

1. Florida

Hurricane season reaches its peak in late August and early September, when the water in the Atlantic is at its warmest. While many travelers are tempted to take an early-autumn trip to Florida, this could coincide with a tropical storm or hurricane. Waiting until October or November significantly increases your chances of enjoying an interruption-free vacation. Don’t be surprised if you see a lot of availability for vacation rentals during the peak of hurricane season – smart travelers know to avoid this time like the plague.

2. The Philippines

When typhoons follow a straight path, the islands of the Philippines can be struck badly. These intense storms reach their peak from August through October as well. If you’re going to travel across the world to the Philippines, the last thing you will want is an interruption to your trip. Avoid these months and you can soak up the sunshine in the Philippines instead.

3. Tornado Alley

The central area of the U.S., extending from Northern Texas into Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and even further north, have earned the nickname Tornado Alley because of the frequency these places see tornado weather each year. This area of the U.S. has experienced some of the most violent tornadoes in the history of the country. Tornadoes occur when warm and hot air collide, and can occur at any time of the year, though predominately when transitioning between a warm and cool season.

4. Thailand

Many travelers dream of the blissful beaches of Thailand. However, it is essential to avoid typhoon season if you want to stay safe and enjoy your trip. The path of a typhoon determines what places are affected. This means that several years could go by without Thailand being hit by a typhoon – but smart travelers won’t take their chance by visiting between August and October.

5. The Caribbean

Other than Florida, one of the areas most affected by hurricanes is the Caribbean. There are several paths hurricanes can take, but in some instances, the Caribbean (and even Mexico) can be hit by storms. Gorgeous beaches are no fun at all during a storm, so avoid hurricane season in the Caribbean at all costs.

The Wexner Center is for the Arts and All Your Senses

Most museums are a feast for the eyes and nothing more.  A statement that is generally true, but not always.  For an artistic buffet for all the senses, visit the Wexner Center on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.  The Wex, as it is affectionately known, is a modern art museum that has standard art shows, is a venue for the performing arts, functions as a movie house, and is capable of feeding the masses.  On any given day, anyone hungry for cutting edge art can visit the Wex to feed their eyes, ears, skin, nose, and tongue.

Visitors to the Wex need to train their eyes to not only take in the rotating exhibitions that fill the wills, but also upon the architecture itself.  The building is a nod back to an armory that once stood on campus while also serving as an example of the direction art museum design may take in the future.  The exhibitions likewise are grounded in the historical framework of art while also breaking the mold of what many people may consider to be art.

For the ears, the Wexner Center serves as a venue for emerging musical talents.  The performance space, housed within the museum, provides a stage for indie rock acts, jazz performers, as well as theatrical performances that blend traditional plays with emerging technological developments.

While touching is generally forbidden at museums as well as for most of the exhibits at the Wexner Center, the skin is not always forgotten.  The recent Andy Warhol exhibition provided several opportunities to physically touch the art installations.  Patrons of the Wex are also given the opportunity to shake the hand of the artists, directors, and musicians whose works are presented.

The nose and tongue are not forgotten at the Wex.  A European inspired café serves daily scratch made breakfast and lunch as well as providing coffees, teas, and juices.  Walk in to taste and smell what they have to offer.

Visit the Ambiance of Another Era in Columbus’ German Village

Step back in time during your visit to Columbus, Ohio.  German Village, just south of downtown, is a visual reminder of the way the city once looked.  Brick streets provide a reverberating ambiance to the tour of the neighborhood once populated by German immigrants.  While most of the original families have now moved out of the neighborhood, the old-world charm has not.  Shopping, dining, and entertainment are all within this walkable 233-acre neighborhood.

The shopping options in the area range from quaint gift shops to a sprawling maze of a bookstore.  The latter is something to behold.  The Book Loft is a 32 room experience in and of itself.  Entire afternoons can be spent getting lost on the labyrinth of rooms containing books of every topic imaginable.  Book lovers may find the only reason to leave The Book Loft is to find something to eat.

The food choices in German Village are diverse despite the name of the area.  Of course there is the requisite German restaurant, Schmidt’s Restaurant and Sausage Haus, which opened in 1886.  It has all the standard German fare, including half pound Jumbo Cream Puffs.  Fine dining in the area can be found at the trendy Barcelona and Lindey’s.  The area also has the city’s best deli, Katzinger’s.   Those with a sweet tooth, who do not think they can handle a cream puff, should visit Pistacia Vera for a bite-sized pastry that is as delicate as it is delicious.

Working off all of that food is not difficult thanks to all of German Village’s entertainment options.  Walk to any number of the area’s museums, or cap the night off with a drink at Club 185.  In June, take the annual Haus und Garten Tour or take in one of summer’s free Shakespeare play in Schiller Park.  Visitors can celebrate German Village’s heritage during the fall Oktoberfest.

Fly into Air Force History

Military historians, aviation fans and those who just love a good museum will want to make a stop at the National Museum of the United States Air Force located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. The museum is open from 9 to 5 each day and is free of charge to tour. When you come to visit, you will get to see over 400 vehicles used in flight, many of which are very rare. These exhibits are not just to look at, but often to interact with as well. They take you into topics such as the Wright brothers’ work an early flight all the way up to recent times when technology has advanced to unbelievable levels.

You also get to view artifacts and planes from the earliest days of Air Force history. Included are engines, weaponry and various equipment that are used to maintain, design and construct these technological wonders from different eras. The exhibits are broken up into various areas such as: missiles and space, Cold War, World War II, early flight and research. The museum also has an IMAX gallery inside to get an exciting experience of what it is like to be in the pilot seat.

Outside the museum you can visit Memorial Park, which honors those who have died in battle. There are over 500 various memorials, some of which honor prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. The museum is full accessibility to those with disabilities and has a cafe for visitors that need a snack. Than National Museum of the United States Air Force is the perfect place to spend a full day exploring some of the most fascinating aspects of our country’s military history.

Take a Flight into Ohio History

As long as we have dreamt of flying, there are those who have pushed to make it a reality. Dayton, Ohio was home to those who helped make this dream a reality: Paul Laurence Dunbar, Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright. You can experience this history when you make a visit to the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. Within this park are four sites the you can visit, including the Huffman Prairie Flying Field and Interpretive Center, Wright Cycle Company Complex, the Paul Laurence Dunbar House and the Wright Brothers Aviation Center of Dayton History.

Each of these sites tell the story of the individuals who played a phenomenal role in the history of aviation. You can get an inside look at the Wright brothers’ personal and work life by touring their printing office, their bicycle shop and see one of their planes that is on display. The Huffman Flying Field Interpretive Center houses numerous exhibits that show the process of experimentation the Wright brothers went through. Rangers will take you on guided tours of the various sites, giving you hidden insights about these famous individuals.

If you want to explore the sites on your own, your cell phone can help you get more out of the experience. The park has cell phone tours you can listen to as you go through museums and exhibits. During the winter, you can also learn how to identify trees that grow on the property at the park. The park even offers a bicycle tour led by a park ranger that takes you through the surrounding area of the sites. This is not only a way to get some good exercise, but also to get a deeper look at the history behind the sites.
